Research Firm Asks Oracle to Correct False Claims about Retail Industry Study; Stratascope Denies Providing Study to Oracle, Which Oracle Cites as Evidence of Leadership in Retail Industry
MARLBOROUGH, Mass. --(Business Wire)-- Jan. 19, 2006 -- Stratascope Inc., a leading provider of independent research, today announced it has discovered that its research had been mischaracterized, misrepresented and referenced without permission by Oracle Corporation to make claims about Oracle's performance in the retail industry. Stratascope announced it has called upon Oracle to correct its press release issued at the National Retail Federation show in New York City.
"No one at Stratascope Inc. has worked on, interpreted, audited or been involved with this Oracle study in any way," said Bruce A. Brien, CEO, Stratascope Inc. "As a Stratascope Inc. customer, Oracle has the right to pull financial statements out of our repositories, but we have no knowledge of the validity of the criteria and methodology they have used, particularly because several of their claims are based on a set of data that we do not possess. Our name, which was misspelled in their announcement, was used without our permission and erroneously attributed."
In a January 16 announcement, Oracle claimed that "the Stratoscope (sic) research study analyzed all retailers trading on any public stock exchange worldwide, with revenues higher than $500 million and at least 80 percent of revenues coming from retail activities." Stratascope did not perform this study for Oracle, nor did it analyze the data cited.
In addition, the release states that the study "analyzed all retailers trading on any public stock exchange worldwide." The Stratascope database, from which Oracle may access financial data, does not include such an all-encompassing set of companies and Stratascope does not claim such coverage.
Finally, the release states that "at least 80 percent of revenues (come) from retail activities." Again, the Stratascope database does not provide such a measurement. Stratascope's database provides total revenue, but does not breakdown revenue into business activities or divisions.
Overall, the press release misleads the public by improperly attributing capabilities and actions to Stratascope. Stratascope has requested that Oracle issue a correction to their press release, referenced above.
