Verizon on board with Jamestown 2007: The telecom giant will be the event's third sponsor. Details are to be announced today.
(Daily Press (Newport News, VA) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Mar. 31--WILLIAMSBURG -- Verizon Communications has joined the Jamestown 2007 commemoration as the event's third "founding colony sponsor."
A spokesman for Jamestown 2007 declined to provide the New York-based telecom company's exact pledge amount Thursday, saying that and other details will be announced at a 9 a.m. news conference today in Alexandria.
The commemoration's other two founding colony sponsors -Norfolk Southern and Colonial Williamsburg - each have pledged $3 million, with one-third of CW's gift coming in donated services.
Organizers for Jamestown 2007 hoped to land 13 such sponsors each willing to put up $3 million.
Jamestown 2007, a sub-agency of the state-run Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, said the number 13 was used because it corresponded to the original number of colonies. The commemoration will be 18 months of events - starting in May - marking the 400th anniversary of the founding of America's first permanent English settlement.
A group of VIPs will announce the details of Verizon's involvement at today's news conference, which will be at a Holiday Inn in Alexandria. The group is slated to include Virginia's two senators, George Allen and John Warner; Jeanne Zeidler, Jamestown 2007's executive director and Williamsburg's mayor, and Del. Vince Callahan, R-Fairfax, the co-chairman of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation's board of trustees.
