City is top destination for removal vans

(Nottingham Evening Post Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Nottingham is the most popular destination to move to in the UK, according to a survey today.

The city leapfrogged last year's leading city, Glasgow, to take top spot in removals firm Pickfords' research.

Of 19,000 moves, more people moved here or within the city than destinations, excluding London, such as Newcastle, Bristol, Edinburgh and Cambridge.

Nigel Lewis, editor of Location, Location, Location magazine, said: "It is refreshing to see that, despite all the headlines about Nottingham's crime problems, people have been able to see past this and appreciate the city's attractions - including a fast-regenerating centre and the pleasant, almost rustic suburbs around its university.

"Its popularity also has a lot to do with house prices, which are significantly lower than in other cities in the region." The survey - released on the busiest moving day of the year - ranked Newark as seventh in the top ten property hotspots in the Midlands.

Of those moving to the region, 30% were leaving the south-east, and 20% came from the north east. The Midlands also had a good retention rate, with 54% of those moving remaining in the region.

The research is a boon for the city, coming hot on the heels of a quality of life survey which failed to place Nottingham in the top 250 areas to live in the UK.

Pickfords' data included house moves in the suburbs, such as Rushcliffe. As reported in the Evening Post recently, the south Notts borough was ranked 115th in the Halifax Home Insurance Quality of Life Survey.

Notts County defender Austin McCann, moving to the city centre from Boston, Lincs, said it was relatively easy to find a place to buy.

John Heeley, of Experience Nottinghamshire, said: "We already know that Nottingham is a great place to live, work and visit - and here is the proof others think so too."
