Nation Group Chief Kiboro to Head Harambee Stars Board

(The Nation (Kenya) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Sports Minister Maina Kamanda yesterday launched a high-powered Harambee Stars Management Board which will be led by Nation Media Group Chief Executive Wilfred Kiboro.

Unveiling details of the 13-member strong team composed of leading personalities in Kenya's corporate world, the Minister said the new board would take over immediately after the national team's next African National Cup qualifying match against Angola next month and would carry on until after the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa and possibly beyond.

Those appointed to the board besides chairman Kiboro are Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) marketing director Patricia Ithau, Esther Pasaris of Adopt-A-Light, Philip Kisia from KICC, and Nakumatt Holdings Limited managing director Sanjay Shah. Others are Kenya Pipeline managing director George Okungu, Betting Control and Licensing Board chairman Joe Adongo, East Africa Portland Company boss Ndegwa Kagio, Betrand Fontages of Total Oil Company, Kenya Ferry Services Limited managing director Joel John Ria, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) managing director Abdallah Mwaruwa, Sameer Africa Limited managing director Eric Kimani and Pelican Insurance managing director James Njenga Kimani.

Kamanda also appointed commissioner of Sports Gordon Oluoch, Sports Stadium Management Board (SSMB) chief executive officer Sam Mwai, Kenya Football Federation (KFF) chairman Alfred Sambu and secretary general Dan Omino as ex-officio members of the board.

The board will also be directly in charge of the foreign coach appointment. The minister said French coach Bernard Lama's exit would be reviewed.

However, Kenya Football Federation (KFF) will continue to handle the teams logistics and preparations for the Angola match slated for October 7 away in Luanda before handing over the mantle to the board.

"This board will be directly responsible for the appointment of a foreign coach or retaining the one that KFF had selected.

Secondly, he explained, the committee will be mandated to package and market the national team and have power to enter into contractual obligations in this respect.

The minister also mandated the board to co-ordinate television and broadcasting rights, including advertisement at match venues of all local and international fixtures staged in Kenya.
