Oceaneering Monitors the Entire World with SolarWinds Solutions

AUSTIN, Texas --(Business Wire)-- SolarWinds, a leader in network management software, announced today that Oceaneering International, a global oilfield provider of engineered services and products primarily to the offshore oil and gas industry, with a focus on deepwater applications, relies on the extensibility of Orion Network Performance Monitor (Orion) to provide a global, integrated network management solution for its 85 offices and 10 offshore vessels.

Oceaneering has a four-person IT department that is responsible for managing its diverse network that includes several LANs and vLANs comprised of 85 routers, 300 switches, 287 servers and a VoIP infrastructure consisting of 40 more network devices and a total of 2,500 phones globally. While there are several network management products on the market, Oceaneering's Communication Manager, Mark Stevens, needed something that was easy to use, affordable and yet did not compromise on the features required to manage such a diverse and ever-growing network.

"Orion and all of its modules give me a living, breathing feel of the network," said Stevens. "NetFlow Traffic Analyzer tells us when we're having bandwidth trouble on one of the vessels, the Application Monitor guarantees uptime of our business-critical ERP systems, VoIP Monitor ensures call quality around the globe and Orion brings it all together in one comprehensive view. We basically monitor the world from right here."

Ease of use and integration proved to be two of the most challenging features to find in a network management solution, according to Stevens.

"We tried CiscoWorks and it required too much management and configuration to be effective in our environment," said Stevens. "I downloaded a trial of Orion and knew immediately it was what we had been looking for. It was easy to use and provided us with the flexibility to set up separate user accounts with different permissions for administrators at remote locations. Not to mention, the NetFlow and VoIP modules integrate easily and use Orion as the core technology, so you don't have to learn three different systems."

Oceaneering strives to maintain 99% uptime across the company and relies on SolarWinds to meet this challenge. According to Stevens, SolarWinds solutions not only increase his team's productivity, but also allow his team to have a life outside of the NOC because Orion contains features that send advanced alerts to wireless devices and generate automated reports.
