Clinton won at least 80 of the 158 delegates up for grabs in Tuesday's contest, according to an analysis of election returns by The Associated Press. Sen. Barack Obama won at least 66, with 12 still to be awarded.
Gen. Petraeus named as next commander of Mideast commandWASHINGTON (AP) _ The Associated Press has learned that Gen. David Petraeus, the four-star general who has been leading troops in Iraq, has been tapped to become the next commander of U.S. Central Command. If confirmed by the Senate, he would replace Navy Adm. William Fallon, who stepped down in March.
Delta, Northwest report combined $10.5B loss on fuel costsATLANTA (AP) _ Delta Air Lines Inc., the nation's third-largest carrier, said Wednesday its loss widened in the first quarter to a whopping $6.39 billion because of soaring fuel prices and the steep decline in the company's market value. Northwest Airlines, which will be acquired by Delta to create the world's largest airline, reported a $4.1 billion loss in the first quarter.
Clinton's win still leaves her the underdogWASHINGTON (AP) _ Still the underdog in a contest that won't quit, Hillary Rodham Clinton pulled off a feisty act of political survival in the Pennsylvania primary, defeating Barack Obama to keep her Democratic presidential hopes alive. The New York senator's comfortable win sends the race on to North Carolina, where the flush-with-money Obama is favored; and Indiana, where the two are close.
Toyota takes world sales lead from General MotorsDETROIT (AP) _ Toyota Motor Corp. has taken the first-quarter global automotive sales lead from General Motors Corp., selling 2.41 million vehicles to GM's 2.25 million over the first three months of the year. GM said Wednesday its first-quarter sales dropped across the globe by less than 1 percent, but Toyota said its sales were up 2.7 percent during the January-through-March period.
Study: Midwest has the worst drunken driving ratesWASHINGTON (AP) _ The upper Midwest has the worst drunken driving rates in the country, according to a government report that says 15 percent of adult drivers nationally report driving under the influence of alcohol in the previous year. Wisconsin leads the way. The federal government estimates more than a quarter of the state's adult drivers had driven under the influence. Rounding out the worst five are North Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota.
Students suspended for skipping class to meet ObamaSCRANTON, Pa. (AP) _ Two high school seniors in Scranton, Pa., are paying a high price for their interest in politics. Microsoft's Tellme launches BlackBerry voice searchSEATTLE (AP) _ Microsoft Corp.'s Tellme subsidiary launched an application for the BlackBerry on Tuesday that lets people speak commands into their smart phones to search for businesses, look up movie times, check traffic and make other queries. Once users download the program, they can push on their phone's green "talk" button and say either the name of a business, type of business, or the keywords "weather," "movies," "traffic," "map" or "driving directions."
Marlee Matlin bounced from 'Dancing With the Stars'LOS ANGELES (AP) _ For the third consecutive week, a last-place finish has led to elimination on "Dancing With the Stars." This week's celebrity casualty was Marlee Matlin, who came into Tuesday's results show with 21 out of 30 points. The actress lost her timing at various points during her mambo Monday with professional partner Fabian Sanchez, and the judges took note. "You guys looked like you were forcing and struggling," said judge Carrie Ann Inaba, who noted that the mambo is more rhythm-dependent than other ballroom dances and she expected it to be most difficult for Matlin.
Kansas City Chiefs trade Jared Allen to Minnesota VikingsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ Pro Bowl defensive end Jared Allen was traded from Kansas City to the Minnesota Vikings in a blockbuster deal, making the Chiefs one of the major players in this weekend's NFL draft. Kansas City gets Minnesota's first-round pick, No. 17 overall, and both of the Vikings' third-round selections, a person close to the negotiations said Wednesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no official announcement had been made.
