AT&T and Norfolk Senior Center Host 'Cell Phone Training For Seniors' Public Service Event in Norfolk October 16th

HAMPTON ROADS, Va., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T Inc. and the Norfolk Senior Center today announced the launch of a new public service initiative in the area designed to benefit the community's mature adult population. AT&T will host a free event -- Cell Phone Training for Seniors -- on Thursday, October 16th from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Norfolk Senior Center -- 7300 Newport Ave., Norfolk, Va. Photo opportunities are available.

"We host many programs to keep area seniors 'connected,' so we are delighted AT&T is offering this vital learning experience for older adults," said Kathy Thumm, Senior Center Director of the Norfolk Senior Center. "We encourage seniors to take advantage of the opportunity to become fully familiar with their cell phones and to learn more about available technologies. Once a person learns how to master their cell phone, they can begin to teach others too."

Erika Thompson, vice president and general manager for AT&T's wireless division in Virginia, "AT&T is very pleased to be part of this free educational public service for mature adults. We have found senior citizens are using wireless technology to find new ways to stay connected to family and friends. More are sending text messages and are eager to learn about GPS services and how to access the Internet from their cell phone."

Participants are encouraged to bring their wireless phone regardless of which wireless carrier they currently use.

The session will cover everything from mobile phone basics, such as controlling the volume on your phone, to checking voice mail to storing a number in the phone's address book. Seniors can also learn about AT&T's Hearing Aid Compatible (HAC) options as well as how to send text messages and share pictures on their phones. AT&T volunteers will provide hands-on demonstrations and one-on-one instructional support. Mature adults can call 757-625-5857 to set an appointment.
