Record Number of Canadians Turn to the Weather Network and MeteoMedia
OAKVILLE, ONTARIO, Jan 8, 2009 (Marketwire via COMTEX) --
More Canadians than ever consulted The Weather Network and MeteoMedia on television, web, desktop and mobile for coverage of active weather during the many storms that affected Canada coast to coast during the month of December.
Active weather was recorded from British Columbia to Newfoundland and Labrador just days before the holidays. With the south coast of British Columbia experiencing one of the snowiest Decembers on record, very cold temperatures in the Prairie provinces and storms affecting Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada, Canadians turned in record numbers to The Weather Network and its sister-station MeteoMedia for forecasts updated more often than any other media source in the country. During the third week of December, over 13 million(a) Canadians tuned into The Weather Network and MeteoMedia, setting a new record, an 9% increase over the previous record high recorded the same week in December 2007.
"We are really proud to see how many Canadians turned to us for active weather coverage in December," said Mitch Charron, Vice-President and General Manager of the television division of The Weather Network. "It truly shows how we have become a part of the daily lives of Canadians. After 20 years, Canadians know that we are there every minute of every day, covering the weather that matters most to them, especially at such a busy time of the year."
Record December page views
Canadians also consulted a record number of pages on theweathernetwork.com and meteomedia.com for the latest storm reports and forecasts during a week which saw several major storms affect the country. During the third week of December nearly 61 million(a) pages were viewed on the two sites. Nearly 11 million(b) pages were viewed on Friday, December 19th alone.
The third week of December was also record setting for the mobile division, which served over 5 million page views on mobile.theweathernetwork.com and mobile.meteomedia.com and the WeatherEye mobile application for Blackberry(R) and iPhone, setting a new weekly page view record. Overall, nearly 22 million(b) page views were served to mobile users during the month of December, setting a new record. The easy to use WeatherEye mobile application available on Blackberry(R) and recently launched on iPhone has made receiving weather forecasts on the go more convenient than ever before.
The WeatherEye (PC and Vista) was also visited often by Canadians during December. Nearly 34 million(c) page views were recorded for the English and French desktop applications which provide current conditions and forecasts conveniently on the users computer screen.
"During the holidays, people want to be able to access weather information wherever they are," added Taylor Emerson, Vice-President & General Manager of the Interactive Services division of The Weather Network. "More and more, people know that we offer the most targeted and updated weather forecasts in the country to plan their daily activities."
The Weather Network and MeteoMedia provide active weather coverage daily, along with local, regional and international forecasts and are conveniently available to consumers on all platforms - television, web, desktop and mobile.
"Our goal has been the same from the beginning, which has been to offer the most reliable forecasts in the industry and to make our information as accessible as possible for Canadians," said Pierre Morrissette, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Pelmorex Media Inc, parent company of The Weather Network and sister station MeteoMedia. "We are committed to meeting the needs of the Canadian public and doing so better than anyone else."
