Myanmar internet service link continues to delay for indefinite period

YANGON, Apr 02, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Myanmar's normal internet service link will continue to delay in speed for an indefinite period, according to an updated announcement on Thursday of the Myanmar Teleport regarding the uncompleted maintenance work of the SEA-ME- WE3 International Internet Backbone Submarine Fiber Optic Cable.

The Myanmar Teleport had informed users in the country online for three times that the submarine cable maintenance work would be finished on Friday (April 3), the date promised in its last announcement after several extension, to resume its normal internet service work which has been interrupted by the maintenance work since March 21.

"Currently, we do not know the schedule for repair completion.

We will inform you as and when we receive more detailed information," the fourth announcement said, however adding that the e-mail service will still be maintained.

As a provisional alternative measure, the Myanmar Teleport has been providing the internet service link by landline fiber link during the past two-week-long maintenance period of the SEA-ME-WE3, which is Myanmar's key international link of Asia-Europe.

"The www browsing through the present landline fiber link will be significantly slower than usual," the prior announcements of the teleport warned, promising that the e-mail service will not be interrupted.

For the moment, the already-completed Myanmar-China and Myanmar- Thai cross-border inland fiber optic links are being used, the service provider implied.

There are so far three cross-border fiber optic links established over the past few years which are Myanmar-China's, Myanmar-Thai's and Myanmar-India's to boost information link between Myanmar and the three neighbors.

Desperate internet users across the country are eagerly looking forward to early resumption of the internet service link amid prolonged inconvenience arising from the speed failure.
