MaxLinear, Celeno Develop Smart MoCA/Wi-Fi Extender Reference Solution Enabling Whole Home Gigabit Wi-Fi(CableLabs (News - Alert) Winter Conference) - MaxLinear Inc. (NYSE: MXL), a leading provider of radio frequency (RF) and mixed-signal integrated circuits for cable and satellite broadband communications, the connected home, and for data center, metro, and long-haul fiber networks, and Celeno Communications, a leading provider of high-performance Wi-Fi silicon and software solutions, today announced a jointly developed reference design that combines the best in MoCA and Wi-Fi home network technologies to enable whole home gigabit Wi-Fi. The reference design is being demonstrated at the CableLabs Winter Conference in Orlando, Fla., from Feb. 10-11, 2016. Traditionally, service providers deployed a single Wi-Fi access point in the home to provide Internet access wirelessly, which can severely limit Wi-Fi speed and coverage around the home. Likewise, service providers also used MoCA to provide whole-home DVR services and enable gateway/client architectures. The MoCA/Wi-Fi extender reference design unites both of these networks to address the growing need of service providers to ensure whole-home Wi-Fi coverage and capacity for their subscribers. The MaxLinear and Celeno MoCA/Wi-Fi extender utilizes the operator's existing in-home coax cables as the wired backbone to interconnect supplemental Wi-Fi access points that can be placed throughout the home to improve service. The reference design provides original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with a turnkey platform so they can rapidly develop their own MoCA to Wi-Fi extenders. The 4x4 802.11ac dual band, dual concurrent MoCA/Wi-Fi reference design features Celeno's Quicksilver CL2440 802.11ac Wave 2 4x4 Multi User MIMO Wi-Fi chip and MaxLinear's low power EN2810 MoCA 2.0 SoC. The reference design also combines Celeno's newly announced ControlAIR™ multi-AP cluster manager software that enables "zero-touch" provisioning and self-optimizing of a smart Wi-Fi network with multiple access points and extenders. The ControlAIR™ Self Optimizing Network (SON) software not only optimizes throughput in the home by dynamically steering wireless client devices toward the best extender and the best band, but it also ensures dynamic load balancing of the overall network and spectrum. "The proliferation of mobile devices, tablets, over-the-top Ultra-HD video, and Internet-of-Things (IoT) will only increase the burden placed on a subscriber's home network. Service providers need solutions today that reliably distribute high levels of broadband service over the MoCA backbone and can address Wi-Fi throughput and coverage issues," said Will Torgerson, MaxLinear Vice President & General Manager of Broadband Group. "MaxLinear and Celeno are leading the way with this MoCA/Wi-Fi reference design and we are committed to maintaining a leadership position with even faster MoCA solutions when higher broadband peeds become available in the market." "To deliver the fastest available Wi-Fi speeds to their customers, operators are deploying companion MoCA/Wi-Fi extenders adjacent to the main home gateway," said Lior Weiss, Celeno's Vice President of Marketing and Business Development. "This joint reference design provides a packaged solution of best-of-breed hardware and control software that dynamically optimizes the Wi-Fi throughput so it can be enjoyed at every location in the home."
