Amerigroup Foundation Tackles Some of Kansas' Most Complex Health Needs in 2016

The Amerigroup Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Amerigroup Kansas works with organizations throughout Kansas to improve the health of our communities. Through its focus on prenatal care, smoking cessation, and active lifestyles, the Foundation is teaming with organizations that are setting the standard when it comes to innovative programs that offer long term solutions.

In Kansas, the Foundation provided nearly $430,000 in grants. Additionally, Amerigroup Kansas sponsored $100,000 in programs in 2016 in the state.

Beyond the impact the company and Foundation are making in Kansas, associates of Amerigroup donated approximately 1,200 volunteer hours to benefit countless nonprofits in communities across the state, earning more than $8,000 dollars in the company-sponsored "Dollars for Doers" grants for local agencies. And, during the year-round associate giving program supported by an Amerigroup Foundation match, Kansas associates raised $15,000 for local charities.

"We know that when our communities are healthy, their residents are able to thrive, grow and prosper," said Laura Hopkins, president of Amerigroup Kansas. "Amerigroup Kansas and its Foundation are proud to team with these organizations that are dedicated to improving the health of our communities and are working to change the lives of so many people across the state. Together, we're one step closer to achieving a healthier future for all."

From providing smoking cessation and group prenatal education, to helping youth discover that eating healthy and staying active can be fun, and supporting high school students who are interested in healthcare careers, the Foundation continues to tackle some of the nation's most complex health issues. A quick look at some of this year's highlights illustrates how these non-profits are helping to reduce health disparities and empower local community residents to take control of their health:

  • Through the Amerigroup grant to the March of Dimes, nearly 130 women participated in the Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait programs in Reno and Sedgwick Counties, and 30 providers at a professional education event in Wichita .
  • In an effort to battle preterm births, together with the American Lung Association, about 180 pregnant Kansans mothers in smoking cessation programs.

Amerigroup engaged 200 youth in healthy, active lifestyles through local Triple Play Club grants to Clubs in Wichita, Topeka and Kansas City.
  • This year an innovative partnership took flight on November 1, 2016 when Kansas Governor Sam Brownback joined a celebration at Schlagle High School in Kansas City, recognizing the partnership between Amerigroup Foundation and Jobs for America's Graduates Program in Kansas (JAG-KS). Amerigoup awarded JAG-KS $19,500 grant to support healthcare career pathways in Schlagle and Harmon High Schools.
