Amerigroup Foundation Tackles Some of Nevada's Most Complex Health Needs in 2016

The Amerigroup Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Amerigroup Nevada, works with organizations throughout Nevada to improve the health of our communities. Through its focus on cervical cancer screenings, smoking cessation, hands-only CPR training and active lifestyles, the Foundation is partnering with organizations that are setting the standard when it comes to innovative programs, which offer long-term solutions.

In Nevada, the Foundation provided nearly $620,000 in grants. Additionally, during 2016, Amerigroup Nevada sponsored nearly $135,000 in programs in the state.

Beyond the impact the company and Foundation are making in Nevada, Amerigroup associates donated 560 volunteer hours to benefit countless nonprofits in communities across the state, directing more than $18,000 through the company-sponsored "Dollars for Doers" program. Also, during the year-round associate giving program, supported by a Foundation match, Nevada associates raised more than $23,000 for local charities.

"We know that keeping our local communities healthy requires a dedicated partnership with key organizations so that residents are able to thrive, grow and prosper," said Eric Lloyd, president of Amerigroup Nevada. "Through sponsorships, grants, volunteerism and charitable donations, Amerigroup Nevada, its Foundation and associates committed more than $790,000 to organizations that offer innovative programs that educate, motivate and encourage Nevada's residents to lead healthier lives."

A quick look at some of this year's highlights illustrates how these non-profits are helping to reduce health disparities and empower local community residents to take control of their health:

  • Through a Foundation grant to the March of Dimes, nearly 240 women participated in Centering Pregnancy programs in Clark County, which achieved a preterm birth rate of 0.8 percent compared to 9.6 percent U.S. average.
  • Through a collaboration with REACH Ventanilla de Salud, Amerigroup Nevada provided cervical cancer workshops for 400 Spanish-speaking Lainas at the Mexican Consulate in Las Vegas, and encouraged them to get tested.
  • In an effort to battle preterm births, together with the American Lung Association, over 160 Nevadans completed the Freedom From Smoking cessation program.
  • Through the Foundation's support of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America's Triple Play (News - Alert) program, this collaboration is combating childhood obesity and sparking a passion among youth to achieve a healthy mind, body and soul. Amerigroup engaged 400 youth in healthy, active lifestyles through local Triple Play Club grants to local Clubs. Following vandalisms in early 2016, Triple Play Gamesroom Grant, provided by Amerigroup Foundation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada revitalized the local Mary and Sam Boyd Clubhouse in Henderson with much-need equipment updates and supplies to keep kids and teams active.
