GigPeak to Demonstrate Industry-First Encoding Solution at NAB 2017

GigPeak, Inc. (NYSE MKT:GIG), a leading innovator of semiconductor ICs and software solutions for high-speed connectivity and high-quality video compression over the network and the cloud, today announced that it will demonstrate a new architecture for the support of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) encoding at NAB 2017. GigPeak has developed an HEVC compression algorithm specifically optimized to run on the Intel (News - Alert) Xeon E3 processor which uses significantly less power and offers a lower cost per stream.

Streaming video has been growing rapidly for several years, consuming network bandwidth and driving up distribution and storage costs for operators and over-the-top (OTT) video providers. Now, new developments such as the rise of 4K/Ultra HD (UHD) video with support for high dynamic range (HDR (News - Alert)) technology, and the growth of mobile video, are creating new bandwidth pressures and challenges. As video service providers seek out new ways to conserve bandwidth and lower costs while still delivering the highest quality video, the H.265/HEVC codec - a standards based compression technology that can save as much as 50% bandwidth when compared to H.264/AVC compression technology - offers the most reliable solution compared to other non-standard, proprietary compression technologies.

GigPeak's new HEVC compression solution on the Intel Xeon E3 processor addresses many of the problems operators and vendors face when trying to support HEVC. With high algorithmic complexity, HEVC requires high processing power for encoding or transcoding increasing both the cost of equipment capable of supporting this technology, as well as the cost of deployment and operation compared to previous compression technologies due to higher power and space requirements. The advanced Intel Xeon E3 technology, in combination with GigPeak's own proprietary HEVC algorithm, address these issues through lower power consumption and lower cost. GigPeak's algorithm takes advantage of GPU optimization to offer the highest video quality.

"We chose to utilize the Intel Xeon E3 processor because it offers lower cost and lower power usage than the Intel Xeon E5 series processors commonly used by other video compression vendors," said Fure-Ching Jeng, Vice President of Video Broadcast Engineering at GigPeak, Inc. "While it would have been possible to simply use existing Intel codec technology developed for the E3 platform, we developed our own HEVC algorithm to offer the best possible video quality, higher performance, and most importantly, the ability to support the 10-bit video coding generally required to support HDR. This full range of advantages gives our customers the ability to support the needs of operators as they continue to enhance and expand video services across all screens."

To see a demonstration of the GigPeak HEVC Intel Xeon E3 implementation, please schedule a meeting ([email protected]) with GigPeak executives at NAB 2017, April 24-27 in Las Vegas, Nevada. GigPeak HEVC compression technology for the Intel Xeon E5 series will also be demonstrated. This technology is designed for deployment on standard COTS servers, as well as virtualized cloud environments.
