NewHeights Software introduced this week the Bell Canada Personal Communication Manager (PCM) system, a PC-based soft-client combo of voice, messaging and multimedia communications integrated into a single interface that can be used in the office or while working remotely.
Bell Canada PCM will enable laptop users to undock their machine and carry with them the same telephone and messaging services and profile that they use at their corporate desktop. The Bell Canada PCM also allows users to initiate calls and multiparty conference sessions with just a point-and-click, know the telephony and messaging status of their colleagues with real-time presence and availability info, and access over 250-features through a single interface on their PC.
“Knowledge workers need to effectively communicate from work, home or on the road to meet their business objectives,” said Bell Canada’s vice president of enterprise marketing Paul Rowe in a statement. “With the Bell Canada PCM, our customers can provide their employees with cost effective mobility and productivity gains. Bell Canada is pleased to partner with dynamic companies like Nortel (

The system integrates Nortel’s SIP-based Multimedia Communication Server (MCS) with NewHeights’ Desktop Assistant soft-client technology. The Bell Canada PCM can be used both with the on-premise and off-premise versions of the MCS, the 5100 MCS and 5200 MCS respectively. Additionally, the Bell Canada PCM operates in conjunction with Nortel's IP and TDM sets.
“Integrating Nortel’s Multimedia Communication Server with NewHeights soft-client technology has enabled Bell Canada to bring-to-market the world’s most advanced, secure and reliable enterprise soft-client solution,” said Owen Matthews, chief executive officer, NewHeights. “We are entering a new era of vendor collaboration leading to new ways of communicating and doing business. The Bell Canada PCM is a clear example of the innovation possible when companies like NewHeights and Nortel team up to enable new services to the enterprise and government.”
Nortel has been making strides in the VoIP industry lately with other key partnerships. Indeed, just yesterday, the company’s LG-Nortel, a joint venture of LG Electronics and Nortel, announced it teamed with Microsoft (

WinCE-based IP terminals and the new WinCE 6 videophone. WinCE 6, code-named “Yamazaki,” is Microsoft’s new integrated embedded development environment for the next generation of smart devices.
“This strategic collaboration provides an excellent fit for our strategy of developing innovative IP solutions for leading telcos looking to expand into IP Centrex services and such multimedia services as video calls, MMS/EMS and other value added services,” said Jae Ryung Lee, CEO, LG-Nortel. “In the future, we plan to make a wide range of WinCE-based products available to Microsoft channel partners around the world.”
