Skype Certifies McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006

VoIP service provider Skype has certified security risk management provider McAfee’s Internet Security Suite 2006, the McAfee VirusScan 2006, and the McAfee Personal Firewall 2006 products. The companies made the announcement this week.

Now Skype (News - Alert)-certified, McAfee Internet Security Suite and VirusScan will add an extra layer of protection for files sent using the Skype file transfer function through a scanning process by the Skype-certified McAfee products. Skype calls and chats will be protected using Skype’s encryption technology.

“We have over 113 million customers and we want our community to use their computers in the safest way possible, which includes having virus protection,” said Skype’s chief security officer Kurt Sauer in a statement. “Skype is already very secure, and McAfee’s products are complementary, securing the rest of the PC environment.”

The McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006 will now carry the Skype certification mark on retail packaging. McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006 prevents viruses, spyware, hackers, and “phishing” scams. The company’s Internet Security Suite blocks unwanted junk e-mail, intrusive pop-up ads and filters unwanted or offensive Internet and e-mail content.

“We are very committed to providing Internet users with the best possible experience in a fully protected PC environment. McAfee is delighted to be working with Skype because together, we can ensure users stay safe online,” stated Sarah Whipp, senior director, EMEA marketing, McAfee.

Skype-certified McAfee products are now available online.

The VoIP calling service provider made news last week when it announced the release of a new version of its communications software for Mac, the Skype for Mac OS X 1.5.

Currently in beta testing, the new version is now available in nine languages including French, German and Spanish. Skype for Mac OS X 1.5’s new features include an improved contact list, calls in windows and chat drawer; a simpler contacts search function; and an "Easy Dialer" for straightforward calling to landlines and mobile phones at lower prices.
