By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

Shaw Direct announced the release of an Advanced HD Receiver, which will offer users more options and more control over their digital viewing experience.

The Shaw Direct Advanced HD Receiver HDDSR 605 features 3D capability and an interactive On-Screen Guide leveraging digital media technology. The receiver is based on Canada’s advanced HDPVR which was launched by the company in September. It also offers interactive services like Dynamic Search Options.

In a press release, Jim Cummins, group vice president of Shaw Satellite Operations, said, “With the launch of our new HDPVR in September, we were determined to continue redefining technology and enhancing the customer experience.” Cummins continued, “Shaw Direct is committed to building platforms for the future. The Advanced HD Receiver is highly sophisticated technology that brings Shaw Direct customers a range of options rarely offered.”

Company officials explained that the Advanced HD Receiver’s new On-Screen Guide offers options for customers to hide the channels they don’t subscribe to. This facilitates easy navigation through the channels, which improves the color-coding system.

Customers will benefit a lot from immediate access to all features and will get comprehensive information on programs including star ratings. The new technology is MPEG-4 capable, which uses HDMI connectivity. It allows customers to view scheduled programs 14 days in advance on the on-screen guide or gain instant access to interactive services, customizable favorite lists and enhanced parental lock options.

Shaw Direct offers over 500 channels, including several HD channels such as the new Rogers Sportsnet ONE, Movie Central 2 HD and Super Ecran 2 HD. Leveraging the expanding HD lineup and leading Advanced HD Receivers and HDPVRs, customers can enhance their movie viewing experience.

Company sources added that Shaw Direct will soon release a new broadband Video on Demand portal. This is expected to be accessible through all broadband Internet services exclusively to Shaw Direct customers. It was revealed that customers will be able to access content directly on their computers through a dedicated website.

Shaw Communications (News - Alert) serves consumers as a diversified communications and media company. It provides consumers with broadband cable television, High-Speed Internet, Digital Phone (News - Alert), telecommunications services, satellite direct-to-home services and engaging programming content.
