Cable: Trident Microsystems Offers VUDU Movie Service

Trident Microsystems, Inc., announced that the VUDU Movie Service, a premier HD on-demand cable movie service, and VUDU Apps, a platform for the delivery of Internet entertainment services on HDTVs, have been integrated onto Trident’s DTV platform. 

It is expected that this will enable Trident customers to offer direct streaming access to VUDU’s more than 4,000 HD and HDX movie library and surround sound cinematic experience to mainstream consumers.

Dirk Wieberneit, senior vice president and general manager of the TV Business unit for Trident Microsystems (News - Alert), said in a press release, “Embedding VUDU’s cutting edge application platform in our connected TV SoCs will enable our customers to quickly bring to market advanced Internet-connected HDTVs.”

“This will bring a completely new level of interactivity to the home television and will deliver enormous amounts of Internet content and exciting applications directly onto the TV,” Wieberneit added.

The services offered by VUDU, among the applications that will be offered on the Trident platform include VUDU Movies that features a catalog of HD movies, with more than 4,000 titles. It also includes HDX, the only streaming 1080p video with high resolution 5.1 Dolby Digital Plus surround sound to be available directly on Internet-connected devices.

The services also include VUDU Ticker, an Internet powered real-time ticker that enables the display of user specific Internet content updates over live TV and popular Internet services, like Pandora (News - Alert), Dailymotion, Picasa and Flickr.

VUDU also features news providers, such as The New York Times and The Associated Press besides popular video podcasts like Revision3 and DiggNation.

Edward Lichty, VUDU general manager, said, “Our relationship with Trident allows us to bring the extraordinary value of VUDU to more OEMs and ODMs. Utilizing VUDU’s unique cloud architecture, Trident’s OEM and ODM customers will be able to deliver an expanding suite of applications and services without having to modify the software in the field. Our goal is to continue bringing the best quality VUDU service directly to your living room, all the way down to the chip.”

VUDU, a subsidiary of Wal-mart Stores offers a huge selection of HD movies, including thousands of blockbusters, Hollywood classics, and Indies available in HDX 1080p with Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound. VUDU is available on Internet-capable HDTVs and Blu-ray Disc players from LG, Mitsubishi (News - Alert), Philips, Magnavox, Panasonic, Samsung, SANYO, Sharp, Sylvania, Toshiba and Vizio and on the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system from Sony.
