Canadian Cable TV Operator Deploys Harmonic EdgeQAM

By Madhubanti Rudra, TMCnet Contributor

In an effort to meet its subscribers’ demands for video-on-demand and high-speed Internet services, Canadian cable TV operator Source (News - Alert) Cable has deployed Harmonic's (News - Alert) NSG 9000 HectoQAM in its headend.

In a press release Harmonic explained that its HectoQAM solution delivers up to 648 QAM RF channels of cable TV services, including high-speed Internet, VOD, switched digital video (SDV), or video broadcast. The solution will allow SourceCable to increase the speed of its Internet/data services and add new video-on-demand (VOD) services.

Using the solution, the cable provider will be able to deliver data as well as HD and SD VOD services to its subscribers from a single, unified edgeQAM chassis. Thanks to its small form factor and low power consumption, Harmonic HectoQAM provides Source Cable with an extremely dense and flexible solution for streaming content over its network.

“Our powerful edgeQAM system gives us a leg up on the competition by meeting our subscribers' insatiable appetite for video-on-demand and high-speed Internet services. The flexible and efficient design of Harmonic's HectoQAM solution will allow us to increase our data, video, and video-on-demand offerings in the future, while maintaining the highest standards of video quality that our subscribers expect,” Darryl Chandler, vice president of Operations and general manager at Source Cable noted in a statement.

HectoQAM claimed that its modular design and pay-as-you-grow architecture will help the cable service provider to increase its data, video, and video-on-demand offerings in the future, simply through firmware licenses, and without any rewiring or disruption to operations.

“Harmonic's industry-leading position, with more than 2 million QAM channels shipped worldwide, easily recommended us as a trusted partner for Source Cable., This unique installation is the perfect example of how Harmonic's reliable, scalable edge and access solutions can be used to deliver both high-speed Internet services and a high-quality viewing experience while lowering operating expenses for a small to midsized cable television provider like Source Cable,”  vice president of cable solutions at Harmonic Gil Katz explained in a statement.

The Canada based Harmonic distributor and system integrator, Capella Telecommunications did the system integration and delivered training for the HectoQAM solution.

Last month Harmonic announced that Swiss IPTV (News - Alert) wholesaler Netstream is hosting a new IPTV headend platform based on Harmonic's portfolio of encoding and transcoding products. Swiss distributor Adrenio installed Harmonic Electra 8000 universal SD/HD MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC encoders, ProStream 1000 stream processors with ACE transcoders, and the NMX digital service manager, enabling Netstream to offer competitive IPTV services to major Swiss telcos.
