LG Electronics Showcases The Power Of Smart TV To Cable Operators

By Mandira Srivastava, TMCnet Contributor

With LG Electronics (News - Alert)' Smart TV platform cable, operators can now deliver content that provides an enhanced user experience to their subscribers in a cost effective manner. At the Cable Show, LG will be demonstrating how multiple system operators (MSOs) can leverage power of LG Smart TV to capitalize on the capabilities of Internet-connected TV’s to provide an enhanced interactivity between tablets and TV’s; bringing live, linear programming directly to connected television sets in subscribers' homes.

Sam Chang, general manager of LG's Innovation Development Group, said, "For instance, at the Cable Show, we're showing a demonstration version of a Tier-1 cable operator's HTML5 Smart TV app, developed with just a few weeks of effort. The app is impressive; it uses common Web technologies to deliver a new user interface, full EPG (electronic program guide), and secure streaming of live linear TV to the LG Smart TV, needing only a single authorized cable modem.”

According to the press release, LG, who was chosen by the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA (News - Alert)) as the "Official Smart TV of the Cable Show's Imagine Park," is also showing Cable Show participants how a new "App 2 App SDK" can be used to build interactive features between its Smart TV platform and Android (News - Alert) and iOS-based tablets. With this application-to-application software development kit, cable operators can quickly build interactive, multi-screen discovery and remote control experiences across a growing population of consumer-owned devices.

Chang further elaborated, "Once deployed in the home, connected CE device interactivity gives cable operators something they have not historically had – the ability to quickly match the best mobile Web apps on the most popular devices with the latest and greatest interactive cable services running on Smart TVs, without additional MSO capital or operational spending."

LG is also working with the two-screen app developers to provide a number of content search and remote control options for MSO subscribers. In addition, TV audience can find linear TV and video-on-demand content from their service provider and quickly run the corresponding cable operator application on their LG Smart TV.
