Jinni Powered Set-Top-Box Delivers User-Centric Content Discovery for TV Subscribers

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

Jinni, the semantic taste- and mood-based discovery engine for entertainment, announced that it has introduced the first Jinni powered set-top-box.

Jinni leverages content genetics and its understanding of user tastes to offer TV subscribers user-centric content discovery and viewing experience over linear TV and VOD. The service will be delivered progressively by European IPTV operator, Belgacom (News - Alert) from June 19th 2012. Subscribers will receive a holistic cross-platform content consumption experience, officials said.

Yosi Glick, Jinni Co-Founder and CEO said in a release, “We are very happy with the opportunity given to both sides and look forward to hearing about their subscribers’ experiences with the new features, as they have been given the good fortune to be the first consumer market to benefit from user-centric discovery across linear TV and VOD.”

The Jinni cross-platform experience will stay in line with Belgacom’s initiative to serve customers optimally, offering what they want in a convenient way. The platforms that will be delivered include online service, mobile app and Connected TV app, all powered by the Jinni engine.

Officials enumerated the new features that will be provided to Belgacom subscribers; the personal “Taste Channels” offers content that will match the viewer’s personal taste combinations, where the subscriber can then select content according to his or her changing moods; the “Live for Me” feature will indicate to the subscriber the program which he or she may want to watch out of all the programs available. With this feature, the viewer will also get to see a programming schedule of upcoming movies, shows, and series that match their set profile.

The advanced explore and discovery options do not require searching in VOD catalogs or saved programming or general category identifiers. The Jinni’s Entertainment Genome helps viewers search for available content in a semantic and intuitive manner using natural language metaphor.

The Jinni taste and mood discovery engine delivers an intuitive, personalized experience which increases content consumption and reduces churn. The Entertainment Genome encompasses thousands of genres that describe a particular mood, style, plot, setting and so on. The Natural Language Processing solution allots an index to each title using user reviews and synopses.

In related company news, Omek Interactive, a provider of gesture recognition and body tracking technology, signed a partnership agreement with Jinni Media to deliver a next-generation video content navigation system for consumer electronics manufacturers and content service providers in January 2010.
