CJ Hellovision Teams up with Playcast to Bring Console-Quality Gaming to Korean Homes

By Madhubanti Rudra, TMCnet Contributor

In an effort to expand the home gaming options for Korean consumers, a Korean cable operator, CJ Hellovision is bringing cloud gaming service to the Korean market in collaboration with Playcast Media Systems.

In partnership with media distribution platforms, such as cable TV, IPTV (News - Alert) and OTT service operators; Playcast Media brings quality video games to millions of gamers around the world using a cloud-based streaming solution. Playcast service is already available with Portugal Telecom (News - Alert) in Portugal, Bouygues Telecom in France and Singtel in Singapore.

In many ways, the new service will benefit Korea’s gaming market, the partners claimed in a press release. Under the service, Hellovision will offer an assortment of the industry’s leading game titles to its 3.51 million subscribers for an affordable monthly plan. In the absence of gaming hardware, such as Sony’s Playstation and Microsoft’s (News - Alert) Xbox, gamers attend one of more than 20,000 internet cafes (PC bangs) to play games. The new cloud gaming service by CJ and Playcast brings console-quality gaming to many Korean homes for the first time. Subscribers will be able to enjoy the superior gaming experience simply through their existing set-top boxes, without the need for a console, the games DVD, or leaving home – it’s as simple as tapping into a TV channel.

“We are very proud to offer the Cloud Gaming service with such high quality games to our subscribers. With our strength across both cable and over the top services, and Koreans’ insatiable appetite for video games, we are looking forward to make a historical shift in the marketplace,” CMO at CJ Hellovision, Young-gook Lee commented in a statement.

“Korea is a gaming nation and one of the largest consumers of video games in the world, yet consoles are practically non-existent. Our service leaps beyond legacy consoles, and straight into cloud gaming. The best gaming content becomes available to millions of Koreans with in a click of the TV remote control,” Playcast Media CEO, Guy de Beer explained in a statement.
