Millicom International Cellular Rebrands Costa Rica Cable Business to Tigo

By Rory Lidstone, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Millicom International Cellular (News - Alert), a global telecommunications group with mobile telephony operations in 13 countries throughout Latin American and Africa, recently announced that its cable business in Costa Rica has been rebranded to Tigo. Previously, while the business had been operating under the brand name "Amnet," it has been changed to join three other Millicom cable businesses in Central America operating under the Tigo brand.

"The Tigo brand is derived from the Spanish word 'contigo', which means 'with you,'" said Mikael Grahne, Millicom's president and CEO, in a press release. "We are delighted that our range of cable and broadband services in Costa Rica is now part of the growing Tigo family."

Tigo is now Millicom's brand across all its markets in both Latin America and Africa. Due to its strong reputation for providing affordable, widely accessible and readily available services — including communication, information, entertainment and mobile financial services, among others — the rebranding of "Amnet" is a boon for the business.

"We are celebrating this change and we will offer our customers innovation in cable television, internet and phone services," said Angelo Iannuzzelli, the company's GM in Costa Rica. "Tigo will make a difference in the market."

Alongside the rebranding, Tigo Costa Rica is also launching new products and services. Corporate customer offerings now feature a bundled state of the art video conferencing solution, for example. Meanwhile, residential customers can now access Video on Demand services in HD with the option to watch Internet content on their televisions.

In other Millicom news, the company recently announced that it had signed a binding agreement to acquire Cablevision Paraguay in its entirety for an enterprise value of U.S. $150 million. A provider of cable TV services in Paraguay, the company covers 470,000 households and has 116,000 cable TV customers as of the end of 2011. Cablevision Paraguay also boasts the exclusive rights to broadcast Paraguay's championship soccer games.
