IPTV On Your Smartphone, Thanks to KPN

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

KPN (News - Alert), a Dutch telco, is taking its IPTV service and delivering it to the smartphones of its subscribers.

As of today, any subscriber with an iPhone can utilize the service with access to channels like BBC1 and BBC2 with additional channels to follow. Android (News - Alert) users will soon have access to the service, specifically on August 6, the company says. iPad users and Android tablet users will be able to get the IPTV (News - Alert) service as of August 13.

KPN last year made live TV services available on tablets and laptops. The service now includes 22 channels.

Because of the new services, customers are going from basic to premium packages, especially since the introduction of a new set-top box, services from Spotify (News - Alert) and HBO, and the delivery of IPTV onto smartphones.

KPN has increased its TV market share to 19 percent after adding 89,000 IPTV subscribers in the second quarter.

The telco ended June with a total of 741,000, up from 416,000 a year earlier. However, KPNs DTT platform, Digitenne, continued to lose subscribers, dipping below the 800,000 mark for the first time to 771,000. That compares with 868,000 a year earlier.

“KPN posted a satisfactory operational performance in the first half of 2012. In The Netherlands, despite the ongoing pressure on results from difficult market conditions, we are driving forward the accelerated investment strategy to strengthen our market positions across segments,” said CEO, Eelco Blok. “In Consumer Mobile, our new propositions and enhanced distribution footprint are gaining good traction. In Consumer Residential, our TV market share and FttH penetration are increasing, benefiting from the investments in copper upgrades and FttH roll-out. In Germany and Belgium we maintained growth in service revenues and customers including postpaid, while continuing to extend our high speed networks and launch attractive new propositions to drive future growth.”
