At a recent TMC (News - Alert) road show in San Jose, Calif., TMC’s group editorial director Erik Linask met with Transparent Video Systems’ (TVS) president and founder, Norman Gillaspie (News - Alert), to get the latest developments in the video world – and see how the company was helping cable operators generate more revenue in the changing TV business.

The editorial director also talked about new products and solutions to meet growing consumer demand.

A manufacturer of cable television (CATV) head-end systems, TVS has readied an all digital turnkey CATV transmission system that enables smaller, independent cable and telephone video operators to deliver advanced digital TV services and applications.

The Challenger System is a high-quality system that provides the flexibility to add programming services quickly, efficiently and securely. It also comes with a variety of affordable set-top boxes, with features like DVR, that can be accessed and controlled from your office.

The maker offers 24/7 customer service and support.

According to TVS, the Challenger platform’s modular design utilizes state-of-the-art enhanced

DVB technology for the deployment of SD and HD MPEG2 and MPEG4 digital video to the subscriber. Also, it is open systems based, and supports linear video, PVR/DVR, PPV, and VOD.

The discussion also touched upon the use MicroSD cards as a replacement for the antiquated CableCards used within the cable industries set-top encryption systems.

TVS supports the new CEA-2040 standard for MicroSD security devices, which is not limited to set-top boxes. The new standard can work with computers, wireless devices and virtually any content and network while maintaining FCC (News - Alert) and Congressional requirements.

As per the description provided by TVS, the MicroSD security device provides the same protection, but more functionality then the outdated CableCard encryption technology. It is smaller, offers more storage capacity and can be used with any device that has a MicroSD, SD, or USB Slot.

Most importantly, this innovation simplifies the implementation and integration with set-top boxes, mobile technology and computer devices, according to the maker.

The president said that TVS will incorporate this new standard in their complete line of set-top-boxes and cable system appliances.

Speaking of new products, Gillaspie hinted that TVS is getting into IP space and home networking and is developing solutions for these applications.
