Asia Termed as Leading Region in the World for DSL

By Tabitha Naylor, Contributing Writer

As other markets try hard to close the digital gap, North Asia players continue to dominate the fixed broadband space in Asia. Limited to the developed economies, for a long time, the energetic expansion of broadband was a phenomenon. While in the majority of the poorer developing countries of the region, narrowband dial-up access was the norm.

Of late, this has been changing rapidly, yet a digital gap still remains. While both DSL and cable modem platforms have proved popular especially in those economies where there is extensive access to broadband, a clear advantage is established by DSL.

In fact, with close to 40 percent of global DSL subscribers to be found in the region, the leading region in the world for DSL is Asia. More recently, for broadband access in Asia, the arrival of FttX is seen as an alternative platform.

In the leading technology markets of Japan and South Korea, over 50 percent of high speed Internet access connections are comprised by FttX, while in Japan, DSL has been in decline as FttX grows. Asia’s broadband market finds itself dominated by six 'high flyers as broadband Internet continues to extend its presence across its region.

Comprising five economies of North Asia, these 'High' ranked markets also include Singapore. In terms of both penetration and sophistication of its broadband services and infrastructure, for the moment at least, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau, Taiwan and Japan have been well and truly leading the way.

In the leading markets of the region, the most remarkable example of the Asian broadband revolution can be found is South Korea, where fixed broadband subscriber penetration reached 37 percent by mid-2012. In the country, over 95 percent of households had very high speed broadband Internet connection. Furthermore, in Asia, a large number of relatively small countries make up the regional broadband market.
