ESPN Enjoys Being the Highest Rated Cable Program in Last Two Years with Monday Night's Championship Game

By Carlos Olivera, TMCnet Content Producer

Monday night’s BCS National Championship game was one of the most anticipated games in its history. It had all of the proper storylines, just as if Hollywood wrote the script. We had two great programs rich with tradition, the University of Notre Dame against the University of Alabama.

We had Notre Dame finally regaining its prominence after years of obscurity and disappointment. Then there was Alabama, reigning National Champions, and winner of two of the last three BCS National Championships. It was the classic David versus Goliath in every sense of the term.

Unfortunately for Notre Dame fans, the game itself was more hype than anything, as the Fighting Irish got completely manhandled in every facet of the game on its way to a 42-15 loss. Aside from Alabama winning its 15th National Football Title, the real winner of the night was ESPN (News - Alert).

ESPN, which is owned by Disney and owns the television rights to the BCS Games, saw a 14 percent ratings increase in viewers from last year’s game according to Nielsen’s overnight survey.

Last year’s championship game between bitter rivals Louisiana State and Alabama saw a 13.8 rating; Monday night’s game between the Irish and Crimson Tide pulled in a 15.7 rating. Because of all of the intriguing story lines and build-up, Monday night’s game was the highest rated cable program in the last two years.

The Crimson Tide shined under the bright lights of ESPN after winning its back-to-back titles in dominating fashion. In Monday’s game, Alabama burst out to a 28-0 halftime lead and never allowing the Fighting Irish to be a serious threat. In last year’s game, Alabama once again dominated from the opening kick cruising to a 21-0 win over the LSU Tigers.
