Ciena's Latest 100G Technology Chosen by Comcast

By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

Comcast (News - Alert) Cable has chosen the groundbreaking 100G coherent optical technology from Ciena Corporation for use in its core network. Comcast will now be able to improve its networks in an economical and scalable manner using Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform, incorporated with third-generation WaveLogic coherent optical line interfaces.

Comcast will therefore be able to ensure sustained broadband development.

Comcast will be able to address the rising customer requirements for high-speed, high-capacity services and applications like HD video, mobile data and cloud computing, as a result of the latest implementation.

Comcast will also be able to decrease the quantity of network units like optical regenerators needed in its network, further developing its network and generating energy proficiencies.

In a statement, Kevin McElearney, senior vice president, Network Engineering at Comcast Cable said, “Adding Ciena’s WaveLogic 3 to our already installed 6500 Packet-Optical Platforms lets us leverage that investment to deliver more content, faster Internet speeds and enable new cloud-based applications for our customers, while also providing future core 400G scalability. As we scale beyond our 100G network, Ciena’s coherent optical technology will help us to deliver on our ongoing commitment to maintain and operate a high-performance, feature-rich advanced network.”

Coherent optical technology from Ciena is one of the important units of the organization’s OPn architecture. Services providers are offered sophisticated signal regeneration capabilities by the coherent optical technology.

The service can also be programmed for capacity, availability and latency.

Francois Locoh-Donou, SVP of Global Products Group at Ciena said, “Service providers are continuously looking for new ways to meet the needs of their customers while extracting the most value out of their vast network infrastructures. Through a combination of consultative customer engagements based on network analytics and transformational planning, along with state-of-the-art 100G technology, we are able to help customers like Comcast transform network infrastructure so that they can meet escalating bandwidth and service demands.”

Comcast will also be offered network administration system capabilities with an assortment of professional services like furnishing and implementation by Ciena. These services and capabilities will be offered by Ciena through its Ciena Specialist Services portfolio.
