Samsung, Verizon Team Release Current FiOS TV App that Supports 75 Channels

By Jyothi Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

There’s a piece of good news for Verizon’s FiOS (News - Alert) TV and FiOS Internet subscribers, as they can now watch 75 live FiOS TV channels and more than 25,000 FlexView on-demand movies and TV shows on the Samsung 2011 and 2012 Smart TVs and Blu-ray players without requiring a set-top box.

This was newly revealed by Samsung Electronics America, Inc., after it tied up with Verizon (News - Alert) to further develop ways to help consumers enjoy “TV Everywhere.”

The app, which went live in July on the Samsung Smart Hub platform, now let’s Verizon’s FiOS TV and FiOS Internet subscribers enjoy a channel lineup including CNN, Comedy Central, Disney (News - Alert), Fox Business, Cinemax, MTV, Spike, HBO, TBS, TNT, Food Network and HGTV, based on the subscribers’ current FiOS TV package.

“In July, Samsung (News - Alert) became the first TV platform to offer FiOS TV, giving consumers the flexibility to watch their favorite FiOS channels from any TV in the home – without requiring a set-top box,” explained Eric Anderson, vice president of content and product solutions, Samsung Electronics America in a statement. “Today we deliver on our commitment to providing the best home entertainment experience as we offer more channels than ever.”

Anyone interested can download this innovative app on their compatible Samsung Smart device without requiring a secondary set-top box. If the app is already installed, then it will automatically update when launched, company official clarified.

Furthermore, the FiOS TV application offers parent friendly features such as parental PIN options to restrict mature content, as well as a purchase PIN requirement for authorization of any rental and/or purchases of On Demand content through the application.

“Verizon’s mission is to break down technology barriers so that our customers can enjoy the best possible viewing experiences on multiple devices that they already own,” said Maitreyi Krishnaswamy, director of product development for FiOS TV.

Krishnaswamy added that by continuing to upgrade and improve the FiOS app for Samsung TV, they are ultimately providing more ways for customers to enjoy their FiOS TV experience on their own terms.
