Cox Adds MoviePlex TV Everywhere to Lineup

By Tara Seals, TMCnet Contributor

Cox (News - Alert) Communications is building out its Advanced TV package, with the addition of the MoviePlex premium cable net and related multiscreen options to the lineup.

The MSO will carry all of MoviePlex’s services, including the live linear TV, video-on-demand (VoD) and the MoviePlex Play TV Everywhere app for the Web and Apple (News - Alert) iOS devices, Multichannel News reported.

“These TV Everywhere premium services further increase the value of what we offer Cox TV Online and Cox High Speed Internet Bundle customers,” said Cox executive vice president of product management and development Len Barlik, in a statement.

MoviePlex, a sister network to STARZ and Encore, has 21 million and 35 million subscribers, respectively. MoviePlex is a lesser-known offering but is slowly widening carriage for its offering of 200+ commercial-free films per month, mostly library content. For example, this month the English Patient is on heavy rotation.

When it comes to digital distribution, STARZ launched the TV Everywhere services late last year. At the beginning of the year, Starz opted not to renew a content licensing deal with Netflix, opening the door for digital distribution arrangements with cable, satellite and IPTV operators.

Cox launched Starz Play and Encore Play Cox in December. AT&T (News - Alert) is now the only other pay-TV provider to launch the entire portfolio of multiscreen apps across the network family. The company said it expects other deals to follow those agreements.

"The Play services have been warmly received in the marketplace and are in great demand from our distributors," said Ed Huguez, president of affiliate distribution for Starz Entertainment. "The Play platforms are an exciting way for premium subscribers to enjoy the great depth and breadth of programming offered across the three flagship services from Starz."

Together, the three TV Everywhere services offer around 1,500 movies, originals and other TV content every month: Starz Play offers approximately 400, Encore Play about 900, and Movieplex Play about 200 pieces of content every month. Starz Play leads with its originals, launching with complete seasons of Starz original series Spartacus, Magic City and Boss, first-run movies from Disney (News - Alert) and Sony, as well as library films from various studios.

Verizon FiOS TV and DirecTV currently also offer subscribers access to Starz Play and Encore Play.
