Entropic Unveils Second-Generation, Single-Chip MoCA 2.0 System Offering

By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

Entropic (News - Alert) has unveiled its next-generation, solo-chip Multimedia over Coax Alliance or MoCA 2.0 system solution, the EN2810, at the Cable Show 2013. Entropic’s initial MoCA 2.0 solution is currently used in several OEM platforms. A more affordable and decreased power solution with no change in performance is delivered in the form of the EN2810. The EN2810 is pin compatible with Entropic's most recent MoCA 1.1 chip, allowing OEMs to upgrade their products to MoCA 2.0 in a simplified manner.

An increasing number of international Pay-TV service providers are choosing IP video gateway and client architectures for the home. The demand for a high-speed, dependable MoCA 2.0 backbone for distributing entertainment services over wired or MoCA home networks has therefore increased. With the imminent implementation of 4K TV and the bandwidth needs related with Ultra HD content, it is imperative to implement MoCA 2.0 in order to avoid possible network blocks.

The utmost throughput, significant power management features and improved network reliability are offered by the EN2810 in order to address the rigorous Quality of Service (QoS) necessities of the service providers. Possible applications include IP-Client set-top boxes when coupled with Entropic's sophisticated system-on-a-chip or SoC solutions; gateway devices when combined with DOCSIS integrated circuits or ICs and other home networking products like broadband routers; access points; Ethernet-to-Coax Adapters; and Wi-Fi extenders.

In a statement, "While others are still working toward delivering their first-generation MoCA 2.0 solutions, Entropic's second-generation MoCA 2.0 system demonstrates the Company's technology leadership and commitment to the MoCA market for both discrete and integrated solutions,” said Al Servati, vice president of marketing and connectivity products at Entropic. “We continue to build on our MoCA expertise to deliver the fastest connectivity backbone network for whole-home high-definition video and streaming media services—all over existing home coax cables."

Entropic's EN2810 delivers an extremely affordable MoCA 2.0 IC, built with the most recent 28nm process technology especially for consumer electronics or CE OEMs, ranging from game console and TV display makers to home networking equipment providers. Entropic’s innovations in the MoCA market have allowed CE OEMs to launch extremely established MoCA devices.
