EMCORE Debuts Medallion 8000 Directly-Modulated CATV Transmitter

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) is a technology that transports very large amounts of data traffic over metro or long distances in telecom networks.

EMCORE (News - Alert) Corporation announced its introduction of the Medallion 8000 Series 1550 nm Directly-Modulated DWDM Cable Television (CATV) Transmitter. The Medallion 8000 is ideal for companies looking for both CATV and Satellite-Intermediate Frequency (SAT-IF) signals.

Medallion 8000 enables these signals to be transmitted over fiber lengths up to 30 km. this will assist network designers in creating networks that carry multiple signals on a single transmitter. Ultimately, this will help companies to bring down network costs and reduce system complexities.

The Medallion 8000 family of transmitter products introduces a common platform to support numerous CATV transmitter applications. It provides various advanced features such as noise suppression circuitry, low chirp control and patented pre-distortion technology. When Medallion 8000 is used in combination with EMCORE's wide range of cooled broadband directly-modulated lasers, the network performance increases considerably, the company has stated.

The Medallion 8000 offers support for complete 79-channel NTSC analog signal. It also supports a fixed fiber length from 0-10 km, 5-15 km, 10-20 km or 15-25 km.

“The new Medallion 8000 directly-modulated transmitter family builds on the strengths of our popular Medallion 6000 externally-modulated series and augments our offering for concurrent transmission of CATV and SAT-IF signals over fiber," said Jaime Reloj, vice president of business development for EMCORE. "Network providers are demanding high-quality, economical delivery of video to their customers, while extending capacity and improving network management intelligence. The Medallion 8000 series transmitters are ideal for extending traditional hybrid fiber coaxial CATV systems.”

Recently, the company won a supply contract with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). According to this contract, EMCORE will manufacture, test and deliver high-efficiency multi-junction solar cell assemblies for ISRO's commercial geostationary telecommunications and scientific earth observation satellite missions.
