QuickPlay Media Unveils Network PVR Solution for Multiscreen Recording and Playback of Live TV

By Sujata Garud, TMCnet Contributor

QuickPlay Media (News - Alert) recently introduced its Network PVR (nPVR) solution, which allows recording and playback of live TV content on OTT devices including mobile phones, tablets, PCs, connected TVs and game consoles.

nPVR facilitates live TV content recording and indexing for a set period in the cloud. This enables viewers to pause and record live TV and time-shift back and forward during playback. In addition, users can also start playback at the beginning of the show automatically, irrespective of what point it was tuned in, or scroll back through content via a backwards EPG. With the new solution, cable operators and multiscreen service providers can now launch new live TV services or expand their TV Everywhere offerings with advanced features if used with QuickPlay’s Live TV managed service.

Charlotte Burke, chief marketing officer, QuickPlay, said, “As consumers increasingly adopt and engage with multiscreen services, they come to expect the same features they get through a traditional TV experience on set-top boxes. Multiscreen service providers must improve the user experience in order to meet consumer expectations and nPVR provides a unique set of features that can help give them an advantageous edge in this fast-maturing market.”

According to QuickPlay, provider of cloud-based managed service solutions for the distribution of premium media to IP-connected devices, these features improve user experience and engagement and minimize the cost of hard drives and physical set-top boxes. In addition, the solution allows service providers to govern and enforce publication rights and business rules without having to engage and pay VOD rights holders.

Recently, QuickPlay Media partnered with Media Excel (News - Alert) to improve its worldwide multiscreen services. The first phase of this partnership will result in numerous channels being transcoded on the HERO 5000 series platform. With this partnership, QuickPlay looks to bring together Media Excel’s HERO Management System (HMS) and the company’s own OpenVideo Media Processor (News - Alert). This will enable the companies to deliver their services round the clock along with an improved QoS.

Wayne Purboo, chief executive officer, QuickPlay, said, “As a managed service provider, QuickPlay works with a number of market leading technologies in order to deliver the best end-to-end solution for our clients. We selected Media Excel for its exceptional video quality, its ease of deployment, and extensive feature set, combined with their partnership approach.”
