TiVo and Harmonic Demonstrate Next-generation Network PVR Prototype

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributor

Advanced television entertainment solutions provider TiVo (News - Alert) and video delivery infrastructure provider Harmonic recently demonstrated the prototype version of the next-generation network PVR (personal video recorder). The new solution is stated to be designed and developed as part of TiVo’s plans to offer cost-effective and feature rich paths to operators to facilitate easy transition toward an IPTV (News - Alert) solution.

Thierry Fautier, vice president of solutions & strategy at Harmonic, remarked, “As the worldwide leader in video delivery infrastructure, we are thrilled to again collaborate with TiVo and demonstrate here how our best in class ProMedia multiscreen content preparation applications for live transcoding, packaging, and origin server, integrated with our MediaGrid shared storage solution can be used to play an integral role in powering a next generation network.”

The network PVR will be equipped with an integrated multiscreen solution backend from Harmonic (News - Alert) and it extends the TiVo Service and consistent user experience simplifying users’ task of finding, consuming and socially sharing cloud-delivered content.

TiVo explained that operators are looking for means to bring down capital expenditure while enhancing subscriber satisfaction across every screen inside and outside the home. The new network PVR can help them as it is designed to bring an experience, which has proven to improve customer satisfaction and operating metrics for global operators, fully to the cloud. It also enables them to manage business rules, including complex content rights and operator policies, and generate a richer, more consistent user experience for their subscribers.

Harmonic’s integrated multiscreen solution built into the PVR is used to prepare high-quality content and the ProMedia Live real-time multiscreen transcoder with H.264 video codec technology is leveraged to create high-quality adaptive bitrate video streams. Features of ProMedia Package adaptive stream preparation application, ProMedia Origin HTTP streaming video server, and Harmonic MediaGrid shared storage are also used to cater to the user demand for video delivery to internet and mobile devices.

TiVo’s Chief Design Officer and VP of Design and Engineering, Margaret Schmidt, will be speaking in a keynote presentation at DevCon5, a hands-on conference for HTML5 and mobile app developers, titled, “Want Your Users to LOVE You? Make Sure You Are Doing These Things.”
