TiVo Showcases Network DVR NextGen Cloud Television Prototype At CES

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

TiVo (News - Alert) announced the roll-out of an advanced network DVR (NDVR) prototype to support next generation cloud television. The NDVR was showcased at the currently ongoing international Consumer Electronics Show (CES (News - Alert)) in Las Vegas. The new TiVo NDVR leverages TiVo cloud service to extend TiVo Service for delivering reliable user experience on all devices and also enables subscribers to search and share cloud delivered content using the TiVo user interface.

In a release, Joshua Danovitz, Vice President of Innovation at TiVo, said “It may surprise people to learn just how many of TiVo's features are already delivered from the cloud but storage in the cloud is the easy part. TiVo is making it easy both for the consumer and the operator to navigate within a cloud environment to facilitate a TV experience that is much more personal and we are once again leading the way in developing the best in class consumer features to enable the consumer to access all the content they want, whenever and wherever they want it -- even as those sources and devices continue to evolve. With an increasingly complicated entertainment landscape that includes a multitude of content choices, sources and devices, both consumers and operators are challenged to find the appropriate means to navigate the burgeoning content.”

The new launch is the gradual next move for operators considering a migration to IP delivered content using low cost IP clients and consumer provided devices such as tablets and smartphones while also improving user experience irrespective of the location. Following the new launch, TiVo will transition Roamio experience to the cloud and would enable operators to manage content rights, multiscreen policies and introduce multi-tier network PVR.

By using the new NDVR, operators can provide premium services such as expanded catch and save options. This service will allow programmers to embed advertising and promotions in time-shifted content hosted on the cloud.

TiVo Inc. is accredited for developing the first commercial version of the digital video recorder. The company is engaged in providing cutting edge television services for any device or any platform. Additional business interests of TiVo include providing interactive advertising, audience survey and TRP rating services for the television industry.
