European Tier 1 Blends Mobile, TV for New Monetization Opportunities

By Tara Seals, TMCnet Contributor

Back-office specialist CSG International is expanding its Tier 1 footprint with the signing of a large (but as of yet unnamed) European telecom operator. The company has chosen CSG Interconnect to manage its TV broadcasting and video-on-demand partner ecosystem across platforms, which will include a suite of mobile and digital services for the operator.

CSG Interconnect offers multiparty settlement capabilities and, as its name suggests, is aimed at providing operators the foundation to build and manage relationships with all types of third-party service and content partners.

Operators are busy uncovering opportunities for incremental new revenue streams, including with non-traditional data and content services. The capacity improvements of LTE (News - Alert) mean that business models are emerging for video and broadcast that meld the silos of fixed and mobile content. Specifically, service providers are taking inspiration from over-the-top (OTT) players and content aggregators like app stores, in order to make premium content available anytime, anywhere on a variety of devices.

The use cases are there: according to Google (News - Alert) stats, during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, around 50 percent of search requests in the U.K. were from mobile devices. NBC also reported that more than 45 percent of online video streaming of the games was delivered to mobile devices.

Operators are being challenged however by the need to give consumers what they want via ongoing network investment, while preserving network economics and profit margins. That means monetizing content and driving new subscription revenue with flexible offers.

“Growing consumer demand for content and data services increases the number of complex, multilayered partnerships our clients require in order to deliver the best connectivity and quality,” said George Fraser, vice president of Europe, the Middle East and Africa at CSG. “Our European clients can now increase automation and streamline processes to build transaction volumes and monetize digital products and services quickly and successfully.”
