Time Warner Cable Nabs a Bouquet of Ethernet Certifications

By Tara Seals, TMCnet Contributor

Time Warner (News - Alert) Cable Business Class has become the first North American company to receive all six retail Carrier Ethernet (CE) 2.0 certifications granted by the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF (News - Alert)).

The MEF CE 2.0 certifications were received for E-Line (EPL/EVPL), E-LAN (EP-LAN/EVP-LAN) and E-Tree (EP-Tree/EVP-Tree) service configurations. The company also boasts a total of 57 MEF-certified employees, 24 of whom are CE 2.0 certified.

“CE 2.0 certification reiterates our commitment to delivering these network solutions using cutting edge Ethernet technology that is certified by an industry recognized organization like the MEF,” said Greg King, senior vice president and chief product and strategy officer at TWCBC.

TWCBC Ethernet services are available in more than 58,000 fiber-lit buildings and 800,000 DOCSIS-equipped buildings. The cableco offers speeds ranging from under 1Mbps to 10Gbps to interconnect business locations within and across metro markets.

“Carrier Ethernet has become the industry’s biggest success story of the past decade,” said Nan Chen, president at the MEF. “A milestone was reached last year when for the first time Carrier Ethernet services share of bandwidth exceeded the sum total of all legacy telecoms services across the world, making it the dominant technology in the carrier space. Time Warner Cable Business Class is one of the many companies continually driving the industry to new heights, as supported by this accomplishment.”

TWCBC was the first cable company in the world to receive MEF 14 certification (part of MEF CE 1.0) back in 2008, and went on to be a first-mover in deploying Ethernet services over DOCSIS that same year.
