TiVo Emerges As a Major Television Platform and Services Company in Europe

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

TiVo (News - Alert) Inc. announced that its subscriber base has increased to more than 2.5 million across Europe and has further helped to establish the company’s emergence as a strong multi-national television platform and associated service provider. The significant increase in the subscriber base was triggered by the adoption of the advanced TiVo experience by the consumers in the UK, Sweden, and Spain.

In a release, David Sandford, vice president and general manager for international business at TiVo, said, “Consumers globally are increasingly demanding a superior TV viewing experience that enables them to access content across multiple screens and devices anytime and anywhere. Our growing roster of international pay-TV operator partners including Com Hem (News - Alert), Virgin Media, and ONO recognized this trend early and share TiVo's vision for the future of TV consumption.”

The company’s advanced hybrid TV software solutions and the next-generation television services are being deployed widely by the company’s pay-TV operator partners, with TiVo now covering around 50 percent of the subscribers at Virgin Media (News - Alert) and around 30 percent of the subscribers at ONO. More and more operators across the globe are adopting TiVo solutions to provide feature-rich television experience by eliminating costs associated with in-house development and other alternatives.

Speaking of TiVo’s strong presence in the European market, Sandford noted, “TiVo leads the market in multi-screen, TV Everywhere capabilities with deployments across multiple third party set-top boxes, iOS and Android (News - Alert) operating systems and the Web, and Europe represents the largest share of TiVo deployments worldwide to date. Our success here puts a fine point on the overall success of TiVo's strategic transformation to a major international advanced television platform and services company. We are extremely pleased with the strong and sustained rate of adoption throughout Europe.”

TiVo has been expanding its TV services suite by demonstrating its full hybrid QAM/IP and IPTV (News - Alert) offering. The solution can be seamlessly migrated between networks while delivering the same experience to customers including integration of linear, Catch Up, On Demand, and over the top services.

TiVo Inc. was responsible for developing the first commercial version of digital video recorder. The company is engaged in providing cutting edge television services for any device or any platform. Additional business interests of TiVo include providing interactive advertising, audience survey, and TRP rating services for the television industry.
