By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

Vidmind and Media Excel (News - Alert), a specialist in mobile video encoders and transcoders, have joined hands to provide time-and-place shifting of linear TV channels in Vidmind’s hybrid OTT/DTT solution. This will allow virtual operators to leverage existing free-to air content.

Also, operators can now deliver free-to air content for audience consumption at any time and across multiple connected devices. Vidmind’s hybrid OTT/DTT solution enables service providers to offer a complete TV and VOD service that is personal and social.

Now mobile operators, ISPs and retailers can use the Vidmind platform to provide a Prime TV experience to subscribers as the offering combines free-to-air and premium OTT content. This will serve as a cost effective and alternative offering to traditional satellite and cable TV, said officials.

The time-and-place shifting capability also augments OTT/DTT Pay-TV offering and enables end-users to view rich content according to their lifestyle and individual preferences. Live TV, premium VOD and Catch-Up content will be delivered together under a unified TV Everywhere offering.

Company officials explained that the solution will transform live DVB-T TV to linear OTT TV with the content owner’s consent in order to deliver the content on different types of connected devices in real time. The content can be accessed at different times also via the Catch-Up service.

The new solution synergizes the Vidmind platform flexibility and control, with the enhanced video quality and versatility of the Media Excel HERO solution. It will be deployed at the operator’s head-end or the cloud. The Cloud-based platform delivers the TV Everywhere experience on any screen in addition to enabling advanced discovery, home media, and Android (News - Alert) apps.

Recently, media Excel announced that its H.265 high efficiency video coding or HEVC live video encoder can encode HD video in live and also broadcast it in real time to smartphones featuring the Qualcomm (News - Alert) Snapdragon 800 processor.

Media Excel uses software and hardware transcoding solutions to power over 38 million live multi-screen TV views daily in the US. Its head end, cloud and edge video distribution, are used by various markets including broadcast, government, telecom, MSO, and CDN. The company defines the adaptive bitrate, multi-device transcoding standard for multiscreen video delivery.
