Vantrix, Kontron Partners to Redefine Multiscreen Video Transcoding Performance

By Mandira Srivastava, TMCnet Contributor

In today's new media market, an on-demand transcoding solution transforms the process of repurposing video and solves the problem of distributing content across multiple screens. Embedded computing developer Kontron (News - Alert) partnered with network optimization and analytics firm Vantrix to build two new high performance transcoding products -- Vantrix's Multiscreen Live Transcoder and VoD (Video-on-Demand) Transcoder.

Both the products are meant for service providers and high volume content providers who are challenged with the increasing demands of supporting multiple device screen formats ranging from connected TVs, computers, and mobile handsets.

Both the products are operating on Kontron's high density SYMKLOUD platform. The 2RU-sized appliance is powered by Intel (News - Alert) Core™ i7 processors with Intel Iris Pro Graphics.

The transcoders support all standard formats, including 4k UHD and processing for Adaptive Bitrate delivery (ABR).

Vantrix's software is deployed as a virtual appliance and operates on Openstack allowing flexibility and scalability. A single appliance can work on concurrent applications -- such as Live and VoD transcoding, DRM encryption, and streaming with selectable resource assignments for different uses. Additionally, the system can be easily scaled across multiple appliances in a group that shares virtual resources on all physical nodes without additional management software required.

Vantrix and Kontron are demonstrating their solutions at NAB in Las Vegas, April 7-11.

Don Vendetti (News - Alert), Vantrix's SVP of Marketing and Product Management said in a statement, "The Kontron SYMKLOUD with Intel processors enables us to demonstrate a significant volume of live streams or simultaneous transcoding operations to support ABR, 4K and even HEVC, all in a compact 2RU package. Additionally, it allows us to reduce the typical cost of live and VoD transcoding by 25percent or more."

Kontron's Sven Freudenfeld, Business Development Telecom-Cloud, adds, "The density increase provided by our SYMKLOUD appliance is a perfect match for the Vantrix transcoding application and provides a major reduction in needed footprint, CAPEX and OPEX (News - Alert) for service providers.”
