Smith Micro's NetWise SmartSpot Adopted by Mexican Mass Media Giant Televisa

By David Gutbezahl, TMCnet Contributing Writer

When launching a new piece of software, a smart move is to go for big clients. Smith Micro (News - Alert) Software, Inc. has done exactly that with the launch of NetWise SmartSpot 3.0, the newest addition to its intelligent traffic management software solution suite. With the launch, Smith Micro has also announced that the new software has already been selected by Televisa, Mexico’s largest mass media company.

This connection for Smith Micro Software (News - Alert) will be a major boon to its new product. Televisa is a global power in Spanish media. In the past, Televisa dominated Mexican mass media through its political connections. While the political climate has changed, allowing more competition, Televisa still remains as a dominant force in Mexican mass media. Alongside being the largest mass media company in Mexico, Televisa is considered the second largest in all of Latin America.

Televisa will be using NetWise SmartSpot 3.0 in conjunction with its mobile Wi-Fi spots. With the high costs of mobile data services, more people are looking to use Wi-Fi spots even when out and about, and NetWise SmartSpot 3.0 will help Televisa capitalize on this. The new software will be acting as Wi-Fi concierge, providing mobile users with a streamlined method of locating and connecting to Televisa’s Wi-Fi hotspots.

In connecting users with Wi-Fi networks, NetWise SmartSpot 3.0 will provide users with a map that shows local Wi-Fi hotspots, including directions to preferred, owned and partnered hotspots. Helping users find easy Wi-Fi access, the map will work even when a device is not connected to the internet. Users won’t have to go through a lengthy connection process either, as devices will make connections automatically. Those networks the software automatically connects users to will be carefully chosen through real time performance analysis.

The software will also include battery saving functions that will either turn on or off the Wi-Fi settings based upon user behaviors. It will also give users up to date information regarding their network usage, letting them know what percentage of usage is through Wi-Fi networks or mobile data.

To make adoption of NetWise SmartSpot easier, the new software will be available on the Google (News - Alert) Play and iTunes store.

NetWise SmartSpot 3.0 is the next installment in Smith Micro Software’s NetWise platform, a series of software solutions developed for intelligent network and device management. Alongside the new NetWise SmartSpot 3.0, Smith Micro Software offers NetWise Director, allowing network traffic control and policy updates, NetWise M2M, for easily updating firmware and configuring devices over a network, and NetWise I/O, which uses ANDSF policy management to validate interoperability between network servers and mobile devices.
