By Jyothi Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Opera Software (News - Alert), a company that crafts products and services that connect 350 million people to the Internet, has been expanding rigorously with many U.S. cable TV operators introducing the Opera TV Store through TiVo’s (News - Alert) whole-home gateway DVR and multi-room client devices.

TiVo and Opera software announced a partnership back in 2013, after which TiVo allowed its programmers develop TV-oriented apps built on a Web technology foundation using Opera's software development kit. The apps themselves run on Opera's browser engine in the DVR and are making it possible for cable network operators using the TiVo system to write apps that draw on a wide variety of Web content.

The Opera TV Store brings popular apps for video-on-demand, sports, music, games, news and more to content-hungry viewers on the biggest screen in the home and the launch of this Store with the cable operators enables to contract out content development, procurement and moderation while guaranteeing ease of deployment on set-top boxes.

Opera's strong clientele and partnerships with popular content providers such as Google (News - Alert), YouTube who are increasingly adopting HTML-5 is a major positive for TiVo.

Evolution Digital is the new company that has joined RCN and Mediacom to offer popular apps and video content to their subscriber bases in the US.

Aneesh Rajaram, Senior Vice-President for TV & Devices, Opera Software said, that they are excited to see the enthusiasm and rapid uptake of the Opera TV Store among TiVo’s cable operator customers, as well as increasing the reach for their content publishers from coast to coast in the United States.

“It has been rewarding to engineer what is arguably the easiest-to-deploy HTML5 app platform for pay-TV operators and to partner with an American household favorite, TiVo. The Opera TV Store helps TiVo and cable operators enhance their offerings with the latest and greatest in app content for a premium OTT experience,” Rajaram added.

The Opera TV Store comes with an advanced moderation panel that helps pay-TV operators manage their subscriber app assortments and it also offers engineering collaboration to enable the operators to get access to advanced statistics on Opera TV Store usage.
