Finnish Operator Deploys InCoax Networks' Gigabit over Coax Access Platform to Offer Premium Services

By Madhubanti Rudra, TMCnet Contributor

Finnish operator Blue Lake Communications (BLC), a part of the Finnish Finnet group of 29 local telecom companies, has recently deployed the InCoax Gigabit over Coax Access (GoCA) technology. The deployment will enable the Finnish operator to offer cost-effective, high-performance connectivity to its subscribers.

In a press release, InCoax Networks, a leading provider of equipment for broadband access over existing in-building coaxial cables, and Entropic (News - Alert) Communications, Inc. a leading provider of silicon and software solutions for connected home entertainment, explained that the solution offers high-speed broadband and future IPTV (News - Alert) services to its subscribers.

The GoCA platform leverages Entropic's Ethernet-over-Coax (EoC) solution, based on the widely-deployed MoCA (Multimedia over Coax Alliance) standard. Consisting of three products with a total capacity of up to 250 Mbps, 500 Mbps or 1000 Mbps, the GoCA platform serves different building sizes over the existing coaxial network, while delivering 100 Mbps throughput to each subscriber.

BLC currently serves approximately 15,000 subscribers in the eastern part of Finland, mainly in and around the city of Savonlinna. BLC’s deployment of GoCA broadband access platform is a response to Finnish government’s call that by 2015 at least 98 percent of the population shall have access to 100 Mbps broadband.

The GoCA broadband access platform was deployed over existing coax networks in apartment houses and buildings. The initiative entitles the subscribers to an array of advanced services, such as high speed Internet, IPTV, IP-telephony and film-on-demand. The deployment over existing building infrastructure not only helped BLC save significantly on capital expenditure; it also resulted in faster deployment times.

Our technology is an ideal alternative to existing access technologies due to its high speed and ability to bring fiber to the coax in order to deliver multimedia content and IPTV services; which eliminates the need to drop costly new cabling. By integrating Entropic's EoC technology into our new GoCA patform we're able to meet European broadband access requirements in areas where fiber optic networks do not reach the customer premise,” CEO of InCoax Networks Thomas Svensson noted in a statement.

Early this year, Entropic Communications marked its 10-year anniversary at NASDAQ stock exchange , and third year being publicly traded. The company celebrated achievements over the last decade highlighted by recent financial, technology and corporate milestones, technology deployments, customer wins, and industry awards.
