RF Micro Devices Launches Differential Amplifiers for CATV Networks

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

RF Micro Devices (News - Alert), a provider of radio frequency components and compound semiconductor technologies, announced the launch of differential amplifiers for cable television (CATV) networks.

The launch is significant for the industry as the broadband CATV products leverage RFMD’s (News - Alert) product and technology to deliver enhanced functionality and improved performance to CATV access networks. The latest broadband CATV products including the RFCM2680, RFPP2870, RFAM2790, and RFCA8818 leverage RFMD‘s combination of compound semiconductor technologies, module assembly, and manufacturing scale to enable improvements in efficiency, size, and performance.

The company claims that RFMD’s GaN technology delivers unprecedented gains in performance and power efficiency, at a time when both are increasingly critical to CATV network deployment.

“To accommodate the explosive consumer demand for digital content, multi-system operators (MSOs) are seeking more bandwidth, higher output, and lower distortion, while also requiring lower power consumption to reduce operating expenses and lower total system cost to mitigate the cost of capital-intensive network changes,” said Alastair Upton, general manager of RFMD’s Broadband Components business unit, in a statement.

“RFMD’s broadband CATV products are designed to address these challenges and meet our customers’ current and future needs for efficiency, size, and performance. By delivering advanced functionality and enhanced performance across a broad range of CATV applications, RFMD is helping our customers to achieve new levels of performance in the CATV marketplace,” Upton added.

The company’s product portfolio of CATV products includes SOT115J packaged amplifiers, MMICs, modules, frequency modulation components, and passive components.

Recently, RF Micro Devices announced that it received the first volume production orders for its PowerSmart power platforms. RFMD’s PowerSmart power platforms are a new product category reshaping the future of multimode, multi-band cellular RF architectures.
