Comcast (News - Alert) Corporation, provider of cable television, broadband Internet, and telephone service for residential and commercial customers, has announced the appointment of Neil Smit (News - Alert) as the chief executive officer of Comcast Cable Communications. Smit will report to Brian L. Roberts, chairman and chief executive officer of Comcast Corporation.

Serving as President of Comcast Cable, Smit who joined the company in March of 2010, is currently taking care of the corporation's cable business arm.

In a release, Roberts said that, “Neil has done a phenomenal job. He has driven innovation, improved the customer experience, increased the speed of the introduction of new products, and has expanded our company into new opportunities for profitable growth. I look forward to his continued leadership of our terrific cable team.”

In his previous appointment, Smit was the chief executive officer and director at Charter Communications (News - Alert) from 2005 - 2010. Smit has also served as president of Time Warner's America Online Access Business where he was responsible for overlooking the various aspects of America Online (AOL (News - Alert)), CompuServe, and Netscape ISPs. 

In addition to these appointments, Smit brings with him extensive experience from his other appointments as Executive Vice President, Member Services, at AOL and Chief Operating Officer at MapQuest. Smit has also served as regional president at Nabisco and within a number of management positions at Pillsbury. Before venturing into the corporate world, Smit spent five and half years on active duty with the Navy SEALS Teams before he retired as a Lieutenant Commander.

Comcast Corporation is a cable operator company and home Internet service provider, and the fourth largest provider of home telephone services in the United States. The company develops, produces, and distributes entertainment, news, sports, and other media content for NBCUniversal.
