Aurora Introduces the Enhanced SMART Media Converter Solution

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributor

Aurora Networks today said that it has increased the fiber capacity and CPE density, expanded the management options, and also improved the reliability of its family of enhanced SMART Media Converter modules.

The enhancements to the SMART Media Converter modules support 15 CWDM wavelengths; high-density CPE enclosure with redundant powering; unified CPE form factor and mounting options; common modules for both the chassis and CPE application.

Additional enhancements are gigabit modules that utilize small form-factor pluggable (SFP) optics; bandwidth rate limiting function; IEEE 802.3ah OAM remote management, including “dying gasp”; and MEF-9 and MEF-14 compliance

The company said that the enhanced modules enable cable operators to deliver Gigabit Ethernet and Fast Ethernet services over fiber, using any of 15 CWDM wavelengths. Moreover, the solution also supports delivery of commercial T1/E1 and cellular backhaul services.

Designed specifically for the cable industry, SMART Media Converters enable cable operators to offer “competitive services” for a variety of commercial customers, including educational institutions, medical campuses, and industrial parks.

John Dahlquist, vice president of marketing at Aurora Networks, said that serving commercial customers is an enormous revenue opportunity for cable operators to exploit.

He said: “At Aurora we have developed a family of high-speed, Ethernet-based solutions, including our SMART Media Converter product line to meet the most demanding requirements of cable’s commercial accounts.”

Aurora Networks is a provider of advanced optical transport systems for broadband networks. Company’s solutions optimize network performance and enable the deployment of advanced residential and commercial broadband services.

This week, the company also announced that it has added Web-based monitoring to its management tools with the introduction of the CX3002 Network Management Module.

The new capability enables cable engineers and technicians to use an Internet Explorer or Firefox Web browser to configure and monitor modules in Aurora’s CH3000 Chassis from any location. In addition, the Web-based management support also extends to popular hand-held devices such as the Apple iPhone (News - Alert).
