Cablecom to Offer Broadband Internet Access at speeds of up to 100 Mbps

By Gary Kim, Contributing Editor

Swiss cable operator Cablecom plans to offer broadband Internet access at speeds of up to 100 Mbps beginning in 2009.

Cablecom also plans to introduce an online video library and a “catch-up” service offering television on demand. To enable the new services, Cablecom is currently upgrading its cable network to a bandwidth of 862MHz in compliance with the Docsis 3.0 standard.

The high speed access service will be launched first in Zurich, and will gradually be rolled out in other large cities. The online video library, which will be introduced at the same time, will initially offer around 250 feature films on demand. Cablecom, backed by Liberty Global’s (News - Alert) UPC Broadband, had almost 480,000 broadband customers at the end of June 2008.
