BT Deploys 2Wire Intelligent Gateways to Connect Subscribers to Super-Fast Broadband Network

By Niladri Sekhar Nath, TMCnet Contributor

BT (News - Alert), a provider of communications solutions and services, has announced it deployed 2Wire HomePortal intelligent gateways to connect subscribers to their new fiber-based broadband network.

BT's deployment of fiber to the premises services at Ebbsfleet (UK) is a part of the BT Next Generation Access (NGA) strategy.

"For more than five years, 2Wire has supported BT and its customers with reliable, high-quality residential gateways," said Sean Parham, executive vice president and general manager, Gateway (News - Alert) and Management Systems at 2Wire.

"We are honored to have been chosen by BT to support this bold new venture, and excited that even more BT customers will experience the benefits of a whole-home, high-speed network enabled by a HomePortal gateway."

2Wire integrated broadband solutions are designed for the subscriber, providing intuitive, reliable user experiences throughout the connected home.

BT's fiber-based broadband network will give subscribers enough speed to run multiple bandwidth-hungry applications including the ability for some members of a family to be watching different high-definition (HD) movies at the same time while others are gaming or working on complex graphics or video projects.

The new services will also offer substantially improved "upstream" speeds, allowing customers to post videos, use hi-def video conferencing, and enjoy interactive HD gaming.

"We are proud to bring super-fast broadband connectivity to our customers in the UK and are eager to partner with companies who share our vision for the next phase of the broadband revolution,” said Andy Kelly, head of NGA, BT.

The 2Wire HomePortal 2701HGV is a TR-069 standard-compliant intelligent residential gateway that features simplified self-installation, an advanced ADSL2+ modem, an Ethernet network interface, a powerful HyperG wireless router for whole-home wireless coverage and support for VoIP.

The gateway also enables multiple users to wirelessly share access to the Internet while sharing files, printers, and networked applications with every networked device in the home.
