Zhone Expands its GPON Portfolio by Integrating Alloptic's RFoG

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributor

Zhone Technologies has announced that it will expand its Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) portfolio through a strategic agreement with Alloptic, a provider of Radio Frequency over Glass (RFoG) solutions.
The integration of GPON system and RFoG is expected to boost available spectrum and, Zhone officials said that carriers can also deliver advanced digital video services without replacing existing analog video headend equipment with the new integration.
The partnership will ensure Zhone customers the flexibility to deliver up-to-the-minute entertainment services such as interactive programming, video on demand (VOD) and pay-per-view (PPV) over RF-based video networks.
Integrating GPON and RFoG also allows carriers to pace migration to all-digital networks while ensuring a seamless consumer experience.
“Zhone’s integrated GPON - RFoG solution helps carriers realize the multiple efficiency gains inherent to GPON while maximizing service depth and revenue opportunities,” said Steven Glapa, vice president of product management and marketing at Zhone.
Glapa said that this integration enables processes such as targeted ad placement, content aware programming and Layer 3 management.
Shane Eleniak, vice president of marketing and business development at Alloptic (News - Alert) also noted that enabling 2-way RF services is vital to network operators. He said that RFoG enables the delivery of interactive video and differentiated services while lowering operational costs and continuing to use existing RF assets.
“Alloptic is pleased to join Zhone in providing these key competitive features in an integrated GPON - RFoG solution,” said Eleniak.
Earlier this month, Zhone Technologies (News - Alert) announced that StarNet Telecom has selected Zhone's Bitstorm platform for VDSL2 and ADSL2+ deployment.
