ARRIS Unveils ConvergeMedia

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

To help the companies overcome the difficulties of media service delivery, ARRIS reportedly has introduced ConvergeMedia, a group of media application and distribution platforms.

Services such as Video on Demand are constantly on the rise – in this case, because it allows users to select and watch to video or audio content whenever they want. It also allows a user to download content to a computer and watch it in his or her free time. Service operators will have to improve their network capacities to keep pace with the changing demands of their customers.

The ConvergeMedia Application platform includes “On Demand Management” facilities which provide support for On Demand TV applications and services. This includes Video on Demand - transactional, free, subscription and advertising-supported - Switched Video, Personal Video Recording and Time-Shifted TV.

“The growth and popularity of digital media has created a whole new set of challenges for network operators,” said Joe Matarese, ARRIS vice president and general manager of On Demand Strategies. “Gone are the days of cobbling together services based upon products built through direct engagement with a patchwork of suppliers. Success now requires assembling pre-integrated solutions, led by a trusted supplier with competency in both software and hardware development.”

The ConvergeMedia Application platform provides advanced high availability technologies such as Session and Resource Management, Content and Asset Management, Configuration Management, Operations Monitoring and Data Reporting capabilities. For advertising management, the ConvergeMedia offers head end support for linear advertising applications which includes digital program insertion, addressable advertising and schedule management for multiple system interconnects.

The platform also offers On Demand application support for new and legacy environments which include Metadata, Entitlement and Account Management head end applications, along with set-top box client applications. The ConvergeMedia Distribution platform is comprised of two new media switching systems, namely the ARRIS XMS and the ARRIS MDX.

Recently, as TMCnet reported, the company signed a strategic agreement with Verivue in an effort to improve their technical infrastructure to meet the increasing video demands. ARRIS claims that this partnership will offer them reduced risks and increased advantages.
