BelAir Networks Rolls Out New 802.11n Wi-Fi Access Point for Cable Operators

By Hans Lewis, TMCnet Contributor

BelAir Networks has announced the new BelAir100SN, which combines 802.11n Wi-Fi and the latest DOCSIS 3.0 technology and EuroDOCSIS 3.0 standard modems on a robust, plant-powered, strand-mounted wireless access point that can be installed and integrated with the cable operator’s network and back office in less than 15 minutes.

This was to meet the demands from leading cable operators. The BelAir100SN enables cable operators to leverage their available mounting, power, backhaul and other network assets to quickly and easily extend wireless services to their customers.

In a release, Dave Park, VP and product marketing, BelAir Networks, said “Cable operators are leveraging Wi-Fi as a competitive advantage for their subscribers so they demand equipment that delivers the highest performance and also integrates with their current network and back office systems. We’ve worked with the leading cable operators to develop Wi-Fi products that deliver a great user experience while facilitating service provisioning and bundling, making deployment and operation easier, and reducing network commissioning and upgrade costs.”

Leveraging the same BelAirOS operating system and BelView network management as the rest of the BelAir Networks portfolio, the new BelAir100SN delivers performance, reliability and network integration features specifically designed for service providers, including:

--Policy management enabling a personalized user experience and end to end QoS and traffic management
--Edge-based security with central authentication enforced at the access point
--Seamless integration with carrier-grade policy managers and multi service edge routers (scaling to 48,000 APs and 480 Gbps of traffic)
--Business intelligence, including user experience insights and location-based personalization on a GPS-based, feature rich management system that scales to 50,000 APs
--Massive-scale mobility proven in the world’s largest Wi-Fi networks

Using the latest Wi-Fi and DOCSIS standards, the BelAir100SN now delivers higher throughput, broader and more consistent coverage, better voice, video and multimedia performance and improved battery life for mobile devices. Already shipping to major North American cable operators, the BelAir100SN builds on BelAir Networks first to market innovations in both outdoor 802.11n and cable-optimized Wi-Fi solutions. The company introduced the industry’s first cable-optimized Wi-Fi AP, the BelAir100S, in 2005, and the industry’s first outdoor 802.11n APs, the BelAir100D and BelAir200D in February, 2008.

The BelAir100SN is being demonstrated at the CableLabs (News - Alert) Winter Conference, February 7–9, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency at Colorado Convention Center. BelAir Networks will also feature the BelAir100SN at Cable Congress 2010, March 3-5, at SQUARE in Brussels, Belgium.
